How very exciting! Meet the newest addition to our little family!

Meet Pickle! He's a Fantail Goldfish with a unique little mouth. :) Here he sits inside his "Pickle Palace."

After some initial stress and nervousness he is out exploring his tank... you know... checkin' things out... like fish do. This is a lovely profile shot of his fins. And, of course, you can still see his mouth.

A little broader view of his new home. I've had that quartz point for well over a decade, and I think it looks better here than anywhere else I've ever put it.

Pickle surveys and monitors his new kingdom from his favourite spot inside of his Pickle Palace.
I've actually had him for two days now. He was purchased from the new pet store on Saturday. I think now that we've reached day two, he's going to be ok. I wanted to make sure he was going live before I got too giddy about it. We experienced some 'new tank shock' Saturday night- the water became somewhat cloudy and yellow. This is probably due to the fact that we put in flake food to see if he would eat it and he didn't eat any (thereby increasing the nitrates in the water) in combination with reusing rocks from another tank. We did of course rinse and try to clean the rocks as best as possible, but they probably still had some residue. So, two partial water changes and a new filter later, Pickle is happily swimming and adjusting in some pretty nice looking water. *sigh of relief* I was worried for a little bit.
Pickle was the only fish with that little line on his mouth- which I think gives him so much more personality! The fish dude was very helpful and when I asked him how his aim was, he told me there would be no problem getting the fish of my choosing. I was actually going to get some Red Orandas (also goldfish, similar though more red and with bumpies on their heads), but they were too big for a little tank to start with. Eventually Pickle will be that size and out grow them. If we take good care of him, he could likely grow to be 13" long (though some grow to be much larger). But for now I picked a little little friend who's name was definitely Pickle. There was just no question. He is very often "pickling" around his tank.
So, it looks like my little cartoon fish is going to be ok and hopefully pretty happy living on my desk, listening to classical music with me, and eventually costing a lot more money when we have to upgrade to a bigger tank. I'm likely to be getting a little friend for him next weekend or so once the tank, and Pickle, are well established. I don't know how any other fish could be so lovable as Pickle, but he should definitely have a friend.
I hope he lives a long time. Best $2.99 friend ever! :)
Oh yeah,
squidgyfishlove got some fish too, which is why I got one in the process... but he'll have to tell you about the Corinelli Brothers himself.

Date: 2007-06-24 09:39 pm (UTC)what temperature(s) is your tank? how many gallons? what kind of filter do you have on it? some filter media can be rinsed and reused a few times if your problem is cloudy water/clogging. just use cool water when you rinse -- you don't want to kill any of the good stuff growing on it.
i may not be an expert, but i still probably know too much. i'll do my best not to let my friendly advice turn into lecturing. ;) i just love fishies.

Date: 2007-06-26 05:43 am (UTC)Well... you should probably just come over and meet Pickle sometime. His mouth liner has gone away, sadly, but he's still quite pickly.
That' and there is Guitar Hero II to attend to and sewing... you know... if you want. :)
